Alice Marie Johnson had no clue who Kim Kardashian was prior to clemency plea

When Kim Kardashian West learned of the plight of a great-grandmother serving a life sentence in jail for a first time, non-violent offence, she was outraged.
 
The star tweeted about the woman's "unfair" incarceration to her 60 million followers before getting her own attorney on board to see "if there's anything we could do," she revealed on the US TODAY show.

It led to seven months of talks with Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner, before a life-changing meeting with President Donald Trump at The White House on May 30.

Sympathising with the fellow mother, Kardashian made it her goal to help release Johnson from her sentence.
 
"It became this mission that I just didn’t want to give up," she told TODAY.
 
When she stepped into the Oval Office (coincidently on Johnson's birthday) the reality star said she first broke the ice with Trump by joking about her sister Khloé Kardashian's dismissal from the president's own reality show in 2009.
 
"I'm here because I want to know why you kicked Khloé off The Apprentice," she told him.
 
Moving on to Johnson's case, Kardashian said that Trump, "had compassion for her right away."
 
"To me this has nothing to do with politics, this has to do with people," said the 37-year-old mother of three.
 
Kardashian also believes that the president, who has previously suggested the death penalty for drug dealers, is starting to change his views on punishment for drug offences.
 
One week after Kardashian's meeting with Trump, Johnson was granted clemency, and walked free into the arms of waiting family members.

"Thank you is not big enough, I have to walk it out, I have to live my thank you out," an emotional Johnson said in the TODAY interview.

"Thank you President Trump for making that wonderful life possible," she added.

Following their success with this case, Johnson and Kardashian said that they will continue to advocate for prison reform.
 
"I've lived it, I've walked with them, I've cried with them," Johnson said of her fellow prisoners, adding: "My life is completely intertwined with those who are left behind."
