The Property Brothers open up about the impact of star-studded renovation show Celebrity IOU

If there's one thing we love to see from the rich and famous of Hollywood's elite, it's a little bit of gratitude. And that's exactly what heartwarming renovation show Celebrity IOU is all about.

Now airing its second season on Nine, Celebrity IOU takes members of the glitterati, from Brad Pitt to Gwyneth Paltrow, and has them renovate the houses and work spaces of their nearest and dearest to say 'thank you' for everything they've given them.

Property Brothers Jonathan and Drew, who work alongside the stars to help make their renovation dreams a reality, opened up about what the show means to them, and the rest of their viewers.

The heartwarming stories of gratitude are what draw millions of viewers to Celebrity IOU. Which of these personal stories of thanks and giving back most impacted you in the new episodes?

Drew: Every episode of Celebrity IOU gives us a lot of joy to produce, because it's like one big hug: everyone is thankful for having each other in their lives. I will say, LeAnn giving back to her therapist and friend Roger was very touching for me. Having Roger help her through a very tough time in her past was life-changing for LeAnn.

Jonathan: The important thing we're finding is how open everyone is in expressing their love and gratitude for each other. Yes, it's nice to do something wonderful for a loved one, but when you're standing in someone's new kitchen and hearing them tell their friend, "You've saved my life," that's a really deep human connection, and something everyone can feel.

What was the most surprising demo moment with a celebrity in the upcoming episodes? Did someone really impress you with their renovation skills?

Drew: Seeing Kris Jenner with a jackhammer is a sight I don't think I'm going to forget. She was a pro.

Jonathan: And Kendall was on a Bobcat tearing up concrete! Now that they've finished Keeping Up With the Kardashians, I think they're ready to start their own home renovation show.

The celebrities look to your expertise to help guide each special renovation. With that said, did you learn something new from any of the celebs or were you especially inspired by any of their insightful design ideas this season?

Drew: One part of the show that continues to surprise people is how involved the celebrities get with the design, but we're not surprised at all: these are people who have worked in and around set design and fashion for most of their careers. They all have a trained eye and are an integral part of the design decision process.

Jonathan: And not only that, because they know the people they're giving back to so well, we are able to draw on that personal knowledge. It's like if your interior designer had hung out with you for the last 10 years. It just takes the reveals to a more personal level.

Every moment of the show draws viewers in, from the initial meeting with the homeowner/renovation recipient to the demo to the tear-filled final reveal. Personally, what is your favourite part of making each episode of Celebrity IOU?

Drew: When we started filming Celebrity IOU, the obvious attraction was seeing celebrities in a new environment, giving back. But with each new episode, I find it's the connection with who they are giving back to that really speaks to me. And every story is so different.

Jonathan: The celebs get so into it, too, that sometimes it results in them going even further into the designs and changing the layouts because they want to get everything just right. We had plans to rehab an old pool on Kris Jenner's episode, and by the time we were done...well, let's just say Kris (in cahoots with Drew) had even bigger plans. And she was right!

Tell us some of the celebs you'd love to see on the show someday.

Drew: I would love to work with the Lady Gaga! She is such an amazing creative person and it would be fun to see her skills in design… and her skills with a sledgehammer.

Jonathan: I'd also love to work with Arnold Schwarzenegger. The TERMINATOR meets the RENOVATORS. Enough said.
