Claudia Karvan and Angus Sampson reflect on five years of Bump as the beloved series comes to an end: 'A gift'

Claudia Karvan always knew how she wanted Bump to end.

But the actor, who co-created and stars in the beloved Stan series, never thought she would get the opportunity to bring it to life.

"We had an idea which was, 'We've got this scene, this moment, this frame, imagine if one day we get to end the series on that moment – and we've done that," she told 9Entertainment.

"We never thought we'd be allowed to. We didn't think we'd last this long, but we get to do it."

Today, Bump returns for its fifth and final season, picking up where we left off with the Chalmers-Davis family grappling with some of their toughest challenges yet.

Angie's (Claudia Karvan) cancer diagnosis casts a shadow over the joy of Oly's (Nathalie Morris) second pregnancy, leading to moments of heartache and resilience. Angie faces grueling treatment with Edith's (Anita Hegh) unwavering support, while Oly wrestles with unemployment and the pressure to reclaim her purpose.

The final installment continues what the series does best, bringing viewers into the family's best and most difficult moments, with heart and humour – and the ending she'd long dreamed of.

"We want the audience to have a good time, we want them to be entertained and laugh at the absurdity of life. Yes, there is drama and pain and some significant storylines, there's tears as well, but we always want to audience to feel like they're in safe hands," Karvan said.

Throughout the five seasons, Karvan has acted in many scenes alongside Angus Sampson as Angie's ex and Oly's dad, Dom.

Sampson, who lives in Los Angeles, said returning home each year for filming had been "a gift".

Karvan, who he previously worked with on 2006 Aussie film Footy Legends and 2010 series Spirited, was the only member of the production that he knew in the beginning, "so I always cherish any opportunities I have to have her as my scene partner".

Their characters have gone through many complicated moments throughout the seasons, but even when they are butting heads or not speaking, Bump never let the audience forget that Angie and Dom still love and respect each other.

It's a unique portrayal of separation, a topic that can very easily become one-dimensional on screen.

"I certainly not acting in those instances, that's how I feel about her as a creative and an artist and producer," Sampson explained.

"If I didn't have that fondness and love for her as a colleague, I don't know that it would manifest that way," he said.

Angus, who lives in Los Angeles most of the year, said Claudia was the only member of the production that he knew in the beginning, "so I always cherish any opportunities I have to have her as my scene partner".

"My parents are divorced and I am separated from the father of my children and it is important to bring hope into that landscape," Karvan added.

"But also, seriously, Angus Sampson? How can you be angry with a guy who's just so lovable and so funny?"

Viewers will have to watch to see the final frame Karvan planned long ago, but can rest assured the end has been handled with love from everyone involved in the series.

"It's a delight and the greatest part of it is, you look around at your very hard working crew and for them, all the hard work has not been in vain. It's lovely that everyone gets to share in the credit of this show.

"It's bittersweet [to say goodbye] but it's wonderful to come to an end on our own terms," Claudia said.
