This talking toy is the new ‘Yanny vs Laurel’ and the week needs to end already

Sweet baby cheeses, here we go again.

The dust hasn’t even settled from the furore of Yanny vs Laurel and already there’s another in its place.

There’s a video going around right now which says one thing, but also kiiiiidna says another.

It’s a talking light-up toy that says “brainstorm”.

But people are also hearing it say “green needle”.

It's chaos. 

Brainstorm or Green Needle? was posted to YouTube on channel called Cheddar Cheese, a channel which seems to have been created purely to bring this to the world’s attention.

It went live on Wednesday, and when we checked it on Friday morning it had clocked up more than 190,000 views.

This Cheddar Cheese person pulled the clip from a review of the Ben 10 Alien Force Ultimate Omnitrix, posted to YouTube by DosmRider in 2014 (the magic happens at about the 6.45 mark).

Of course, this surfaced around the same time as the Yanny vs Laurel saga which, in case you were living under a rock, stemmed from this:

People got pretty passionate about their girl Yanny, with heated debates flaring up around the globe.

And now the green needle is injecting more controversy into otherwise dull workplaces.

We sent it around the office and are now drowning in “reply all” responses, feeling kind of like Jasmine struggling to breathe in that giant hourglass in Aladdin, but waaaay less attractive.

Here’s a snippet:

“Brainstorm, obvs.”

“Green needle.”

“Hundo brain storm.”

“If I think ‘brainstorm’, I hear it. If I think ‘green needle’, I hear that,” one bloke said, sounding far too Descartes-equse for a Friday morning.

But he’s right – you can choose to hear either.

With the crappy sound quality, you brain fills in the gaps automatically, but you can consciously determine what you hear.

And it’s from this that we choose to extract some kind of life lesson from this internet poison.

Because this perfectly illustrates the whole “you see what you want to see” thing.

You can choose to perceive it as one thing or another.

It’s like how you can choose to interpret the person chewing loudly as someone who is maliciously targeting you in an attempt to drive you insane, or simply as someone enjoying their cinnamon scroll.

We’re the masters of our own minds, and it took a translucent light-up Ben 10 toy for us to realise that.
