Amy Schumer's son Gene makes surprise cameo on Ellen

Amy Schumer is one of those beloved Hollywood actresses who can instantly make you feel right at home. This, of course, is helped on today's episode of The Ellen DeGeneres Show by the fact that she is at home. But you wouldn't know it to see her.

As she spoke to DeGeneres in the TV studio, the Trainwreck actress appeared on a television screen that was sat on a chair opposite DeGeneres. Underneath the screen were a pair of prop legs in shoes and skirt, making it look as though Schumer was there in the studio.

This allowed Schumer and the talk show's comedian host to have a few laughs before launching into the rest of the show.

"My legs, are they too pale? I was so nervous," Schumer said in feigned horror.

"I was going to use self-tanner, but at the last second decided just to go out there and dress up Amy and go down to the studio and look your best, and here I am!"

The discussion then turned to Schumer's little boy Gene, who she shares with husband Chris Fischer.

″I haven't seen you since you've had a child," DeGeneres said. "How is that child doing and how old is he now?" Schumer said he was 17 months old.

DeGeneres then showed a photo of the blonde-haired boy on the screen behind the pair, eliciting a collective 'awww' from her audience, who appeared in the studio via Zoom link due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Schumer also proudly boasted about the lucky moment she was able to catch Gene's first words on video, and shared them with the audience.

A clip that showed Schumer with friends and family all surrounding Gene appeared, which the star has also posted to her Instagram account, and as Gene approaches a small toy kitchen, he turns around and says the word "mum", to rapturous applause from those off-camera.

Schumer then joked, "Or maybe he said 'bomb'. Either way, I was excited."

However, the A-lister went on to explain that "mum" was not in fact his very first word and shared her son's latest surprising fascination.

″Actually that is not his first word, I was his second word. His first word is 'car', which definitely hurt both of our feelings,″ she said.

″He loves cars. I don't know, Chris and I don't care about cars, but he is obsessed. Anywhere we go... he just wants to be in the parking lot, he just wants to look at cars. Which is really convenient because everywhere you go there are cars."

Schumer also addressed why she and her husband decided to change their son's middle name.

"You know how sometimes parents by accident name their children 'genital?'" Schumer said with a sly smile as DeGeneres laughed.

Schumer had initially decided to name her son Gene Attell Schumer after her good friend Dave Attell. But she later decided that the name in its entirety sounded a little... off-putting, so they changed their son's middle name to David, meaning that she was still able to honour her friend while staying happy with her son's name.

Gene later came on-screen with Schumer, and she and DeGeneres attempted to make the little boy say "mum" once more, to no avail before he grew bored and walked off-screen again.
