EXCLUSIVE: When it comes to conversations of consent, the stakes are high – but a parenting expert has shared a simple approach to tackling the all-important topic.

Episode 2 of Parental Guidance was all about peer pressure and consent, and in an exclusive video on the topic, parenting expert Dr Justin Coulson shared a straightforward explanation for parents to use.

"This circle here is what I want, this circle here is what the other person wants, and the place where they overlap right there in a middle, that's what we want," Dr Coulson shared.

"So long as we both want the same thing we're at consent. But if I'm forcing you to do what I want or you're forcing me to do what you want, that's not consent."

Dr Justin said that consent parents have a big role in modelling consent to their children – and while we often think of it in regards to intimacy, consent is crucial in all manners of life.

"Monkey see, monkey do. So the modelling, the example that we provide, it casts a long shadow into our children's lives for better or for worse," he explained.
