Why I'd recommend watching the Chucky TV series as a horror fanatic

If you were ever a fan of the Chucky franchise, you're in for a real treat!

Just in time for Halloween, the notorious killer doll has made a highly anticipated return to the big screen.

Season 2 of the horror series is available to stream now on 9Now. Episodes are fast-tracked from the US and streaming exclusively for free for Australian audiences with weekly episodes.

The iconic horror film has been turned into a series, and throughout Season 1 we watched Chucky cause deadly havoc around Jake's hometown of Hackensack, New Jersey, after he picked Chucky at a yard sale.

Season 2 resumes where first season ended, and if the trailer is anything to go by, which you can watch above, the killer doll is back with a vengeance and it's about to get messy.

Now you're up to speed, here are four reasons why you should watch it:

1. It's connected to the movies

The first big tick this series got from me was that it acts as a direct sequel to all the Child's Play movies. Over the course of the seven films, we've watched Chucky terrorise many families, get married to Tiffany Valentine (Bride of Chucky) and even had a child (Seed of Chucky).

So to essentially pick up where the movies left off was a great start.

The most recent sequel was 2017's Cult of Chucky. Chucky's head was shot off by his original owner, Andy, yet somehow he is still alive.

Chucky goes on a murderous rampage, killing disbelieving employees and tenants at a mental institution with various dramatic and hilarious tricks.

2. People from the past return

The series features actors and characters from the films, including Jennifer Tilly as Tiffany Valentine, Chucky's former lover and partner in crime; Fiona Dourif as Nica Pierce, a paraplegic woman who, since the events of Cult of Chucky, has been possessed by Chucky, and Alex Vincent as Andy Barclay, Chucky's arch-nemesis, who has been tormented by him since 1988.

3. He's the same old Chucky we love to hate

One factor that really stood out to me was that they haven't tried to change the dynamic of Chucky — even coming down to the sound of his voice.

The iconic Brad Dourif, who's voiced the killer doll since 1988's original Child's Play, is back again — which is a real hit with the OG fans.

Now you might think that since it's a TV show, the violence might be softened. But while it is bloody, it's not so much gory. I've always found the franchise more humorous than scary, and that continues here.

We still see Chucky in all his unhinged glory from electrocution and stabbing to setting houses on fire. Chucky's kills are as extreme as ever and I mean, who wouldn't be scared by a two-foot-tall doll talking doll in bright kids' clothes? It screams red flags.

4. It delves into Chucky's past

As we saw in the first season, the show increasingly delving into its own past. Including some major intersections of different storylines which have been building since 1988.

Throughout the season, we navigate through Charles' life through flashbacks — even his very first killing.

And since the second season has just dropped on 9Now, it will be interesting to see what else we can uncover about Chucky's dark past.
