So apparently there are sharks out there who can live for a good 200 years.

Jeremy Wade, the host of Animal Planet's River Monsters reeled in a whopping Greenland shark on his show earlier this month, prompting a bunch of outbursts of "oh, well what do you know?".

He was out wetting a line in the freezing Norwegian waters when he hooked himself the beast, which was estimated to weigh in at about 300kg.

And apparently old mate is quite the old mate – with an expert on board Wade's boat guessing the shark to be something in the ballpark of 200 years old.

TWO HUNDRED YEARS.

And that's just a casual estimate; this old geezer could still be going through its mid-life crisis, with scientists observing a female Greenland shark they reckon was AT LEAST 400 years old.

These sharks don't reach sexual maturity until 150 years, which is a bloody long time to put up with the BS of puberty if you ask us.

A clip of Wade reeling in, tagging and releasing the whopper notched up nearly 80,000 views on YouTube.

It was Wade's oldest catch in the history of the nine-season show, which is wrapping up this year.

Last month he told Fox Sports' Nate Scott he had "mixed feelings" about the show coming to an end.

"I think at the beginning… I had a list in my head of fish around the world, you know, maybe we can look at some of those," Wade said.

"We've just reached the point where I've ticked off all those boxes, plus a whole lot more."

"That's great, but it’s also quite sad as well."

Wade says that while the show is wrapping up, they've "kept the best stuff to the last".
