A newly discovered species of kitten-sized lions that once prowled northern Australia has been named after British naturalist Sir David Attenbrough.

The recently discovered marsupial lions were the size of a big kitten and lived 18 million years ago in the Riversleigh area of remote north-west Queensland, researchers from the University of NSW believe.

They announced on Wednesday they were naming the tiny lions Microleo attenboroughi, after Sir David Attenborough to recognise his support for world heritage area where the first fossil of the little lion was found.
