Billionaire business man Roman Abramovich is buying up close to a city block of real estate in New York to build one mega mansion.

The Russian steel magnate and owner of the Chelsea Football Club is building the mansion to live in with his art collector girlfriend Dasha Zhukova, the New York Post reports.

Mr Abramovich began work plans for his massive mansion in October last year after secretly buying a town house in Manhattan for $29.7 million from developer Larry Gluck.

Last month, the wealthy businessman purchased the property two doors down from the East 75th Street townhouse for $18.3 million.

The owners of the home in between Mr Abramovich's new properties are reportedly close to selling it to a "Russian" mystery buyer.

Mr Gluck told the media outlet he thought it was “super cool” Russia's fifth richest person bought his townhouse.

The sellers of the townhouses on East 75th Street did not know that Mr Abramovich was the buyer.

“They just got a knock on their door one day and thought a rich Russian wanted to buy their townhouse," the media outlet quoted them as saying.

Mr Abramovich has an estimated personal fortune of $11.5 billion.

His wealth makes him the 50th richest person in the world, according to Forbes.
