The rare Aussie $2 coins now worth hundreds

Check your wallet, your purse, the back of the couch and down the sides of your car seats.

Because a few coins that are officially worth $2 are skyrocketing in value on the collectors' market.

"The coin collecting market is absolutely crazy right now," TikTok user Joel Kandiah Borloo said.

The money collector and high school commerce teacher has shown off two particular coins growing in value.

"The market has been hot for these two $2 coins, which are the lowest minted coloured circulating $2 coins in Australian history," he said.

A $2 coloured Red Poppy coin with a red poppy on it is now selling for between $150 to $370.

An uncirculated Red Poppy is currently on sale on eBay for $850. Whether it sells for that amount is another matter.

And the purple 60-year coronation coin from 2013 has jumped up in value to between $75 and $180.

Both coins have been in circulation for several years now, but their unusual design and their low mintage numbers have made them very collectible.

Only 503,000 of the Red Poppy coins were minted in 2012, and 995,000 of the purple coronation were minted in 2013.

But the collectors' value of these coins doesn't mean much in the broader market. 

One of these coloured coins might buy you a KitKat at your local supermarket, and if you turn one in at the back, you might get four 50c pieces.
