New ID cards approved for Queensland teens

Queensland teens can now access a general purpose legal ID card that allows them to get on with life, following its approval in state parliament.

The reform overhauls the current "18-plus" card to allow teens as young as 15 access a form of legal identification without applying for a learner's permit.

Deputy Premier and Transport Minister Jackie Trad said on Wednesday the government pursued the matter to allow teenagers greater freedom in a modern world.

"By opening up proof-of- age cards to this age group, we're moving with the times to make it easier for these young Queenslanders to open bank accounts, get phone contracts, enrol in TAFE and tertiary courses and get employment," Ms Trad said.

A proof-of- age card will be $66.65 and valid for 10 years.
