Melbourne set to host Australia's biggest eSport event

Melbourne is soon to be home to Australia’s largest ever eSport event, with the state government announcing a new deal that will see the world’s top gamers take to the stage.

A partnership with TEG Live (Sydney based live events company) and the world’s biggest independent eSports company, ESL, has secured the Melbourne event for the next five years.

The event is expected to generate up to $25 million for Victoria, adding to jobs and boosting local business.

At least 25,000 people are expected to flock to Melbourne’s sporting precinct, filling seats at Rod Laver Arena, Margaret Court Arena and the Melbourne Park Function Centre.

“It’s a fantastic example that the creative economy is a very diverse thing,” Premier Daniel Andrews told 9NEWS.

Victoria’s Minister for Sports and Major Events, John Eren, says Melbourne will become every gamers dream, “With millions of gamers at home and abroad, it’s time to bring all the action and fanfare of eSports to our backyard.”

Prize money for some world professional gaming tournaments can reach upwards $500,000 USD.

The ‘Melbourne eSports Open’ will take place in the first week of September.
