Google is investigating allegations that its Street View car ran over a small dog in Chile and kept on driving.

The images shot in March this year in the city of Santiago initially shows the dog running in front of the car.

In subsequent shots, the dog is seen lying on its side.

In the first two images the dog is seen moving from one side to the other, but remains motionless in subsequent pictures.

"We've taken security measures and have guidelines in place to protect people, and animals, as we drive thousands of kilometres to bring useful and relevant information to maps users around the world," a Google spokesman told Mail Online.

"We are reviewing the imagery to try to understand and maybe inform what happened."

It is the second time a dog has appeared to have been hit by the Street View car in Santiago.

In April last year a medium-size dog was seen lying on its back in the centre of an intersection moments after it was seen running towards the car.

Both apparent accidents are still live on the site.
