Google asks the internet for 'N' word suggestions

First there was Mr Splashy Pants the whale, and then there was Boaty McBoatface, and now Google has appeared to fuel the frenzy of online naming campaigns by asking for suggestions for its Android N release. 

Google has previously named its A through to M releases after sweet treats, with Marshmallow the latest in the alphabetically ordered releases.

The Android N developer preview was released about two months ago, and Google yesterday posted a tongue-in-cheek Youtube video calling for name suggestions from the public.

The video shows staff at "Professional  Naming, Inc." brainstorming ideas and sampling foods beginning with the letter 'N'.

Viewers are then asked "What would you #NameAndroidN?"

The campaign has been ridiculed by some Twitter users, with many suggesting it could attract offensive responses. 

Names suggestions can be lodged through the Android website, the terms and conditions of which state "this is solely intended to be for entertainment purposes; the name(s) that you submit will not be judged…"

The campaign closes on June 8.
