Gold Coast tops Qld mobile phone offences

Gold Coast motorists have the dubious honour of being the worst offenders in Queensland when it comes to using mobile phones while driving, racking up more than 13 infringements a day.

Queensland Police Service statistics show Gold Coast drivers were handed 2424 infringements for the offence in the first half of the year.

The next worst regions were North Brisbane (1958), South Brisbane (1796) and Sunshine Coast (924).

RACQ, the state's peak motoring body, says it's frustrated with drivers' arrogance behind the wheel.

"Whether you're texting, talking on the phone or checking social media while driving, it means you're not paying attention on the road," spokeswoman Lauren Ritchie said.

"You see it almost every time you drive, someone staring down at their laps thinking that no one will notice them on their phone."

Ms Ritchie said this year's road toll was on track to be worse than 2014, with 201 lives already lost - 13 more than this same time last year.

Distracted mobile phone users were contributing to that figure, she said.

"It's about time we woke up to ourselves and realised the safest place for your mobile phone is out of reach."
