Cadbury has shrunk its Freddo frogs by one-fifth due to higher production costs, but the recommended retail prices will stay the same.

The chocolate is now 12g, down from 15g, the Herald Sun reports.

A spokesman for Cadbury's global parent company, Mondelez, said: "We're making a change to the size of the product because of manufacturing cost increases that we can no longer absorb."

Mondelez does not set retail prices.

However, a Melbourne shop owner who noticed the lighter weight on a recent order of plain frog labels said he was not notified and his wholesale cost did not change.

The Freddo downsizing follows Cadbury announcement in February that it would trim its Dairy Milk family chocolate blocks from 220g to 200g.
