Fake Star Wars footage a must-see

This "leaked" footage from the set of the new Star Wars is being hailed as a piece of genius — despite the fact everyone knows it's fake.

The footage, uploaded a week ago by German YouTube user "Frank Wunderlich" and viewed more than a million-and-a-half times, shows what it might look like if the Imperial fleet were real and waiting to be deployed from a present-day airport.

"I took these pictures on my flight back from the States to Germany at the Frankfurt Airport," the user claims in the video description.

The video's creator merges footage from the very real Frankfurt Airport with superimposed images of various Star Wars models including AT-ST Walkers, Imperial Shuttles and an Imperial Star Destroyer.

"It's rare that fake leaked footage is both unconvincing and absolutely amazing at the same," wrote Mashable.

Jellyfish Pictures chief executive and visual effects expert Philip Dobree estimated the fan video would have taken about two weeks to complete, or more if the creator animated the walking tanks himself, The Guardian reports.

"It is an obvious hoax and, at the same time, it's pretty impressive," the newspaper said.

The real Star Wars Episode VII is currently being filmed at London's Pinewood Studios since location shooting in Abu Dhabi finished in May.
