Facebook has confirmed it will soon phase out the messaging feature from its mobile platforms, instead forcing people to use the sites standalone Messenger app.

A Facebook spokeswoman told PC World the changes will come into effect over the next few days, but for now will only impact users on iOS and Android devices.

The spokeswoman said the company's goal is to make Messenger the best mobile service for messaging, and to help users avoid confusion from using two mobile products for the same thing.

Facebook Messenger currently has more than 200 million monthly active users, with 1.3 billion people using the main site per month.

Fellow social media giant Twitter has around 270 million monthly users.
