Facebook goes down unexpectedly

Facebook users around the world were left twiddling their thumbs tonight with the social media site crashing unexpectedly.

Users attempting to log on were met with an error message saying "something" has gone wrong.

Facebook has told ninemsn the network is completely restored but the cause of the fault is still unknown.

Facebook's Australian spokeswoman Antonia Christie said: "Earlier today we experienced an issue which prevented some users from posting on Facebook for a period of time.

"We resolved the issue quickly and we are back to 100 percent. We are sorry for any inconvenience caused."

The number of people and in how many countries were affected is still unknown.

During the outage, people predictably took to other social media outlets, including Twitter and Instagram, to bemoan the crash.

Twitter user Simon Thompson joked: "Where were you in the Great Facebook Crash of 2014, dad?" "On Twitter son, but I Instagrammed about it."

The crash has also spawned its own hashtag, #FacebookDown.
