Why Starfield is set to define a generation of gaming

It's arguably the biggest video game of the year: Starfield.

Coming to Xbox Series X|S and PC next week, this game looks to define the current generation of Xbox. 

Starfield is the first new IP from Bethesda Game Studios in 25 years. This is the same game studio that gave us The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and Fallout 4.

Set in the depths of space, Starfield sees you create your own character, from their looks down to their origins.

You could take the Han Solo route, as I did, playing the part of a Space Scoundrel — or perhaps you picture yourself as a chef or scientist. There are dozens of ways to express your character's traits and abilities. 

Once you've designed your character, you set off on a starship and begin to explore the galaxy.

Earth exists in Starfield, as does our entire solar system; Sol. In fact, you can visit all the real life planets and moons. If you've ever wanted to step foot on the surface of Mars, now you can.

I noted in the game's opening title sequence, as well as the end credits, Bethesda attributed NASA and others for real-life planet defining data.

There's a lengthy storyline to follow in the game, as you meet with the exploration group Constellation to unlock the secrets of the stars. It's a truly wonderful journey. 

Beginner gameplay tips

As much as you're encouraged to explore, if this is your first Starfield playthrough, I'd recommend sticking close to the main quest line, at least for the first few hours. 

There's so much to learn and it can get a bit overwhelming if you're unsure of what do to next.

Be prepared for battle.

Going head-to-head in a space battle while dodging city-sized asteroids and flurries of lasers is intense. Make sure you're prepared when grav jumping to another planet, you don't want to be caught with your shields down.

As with most other Bethesda RPGs, your inventory is managed by weight, so you'll want to make sure you manage this correctly. 

Reaching your carrying limit won't slow you down too much, but rather greatly reduce your stamina and oxygen levels. To help with this, make sure you utilise your companion's inventory and your ship's cargo hold. 

Speaking of companions, it's always great to have one with you for the journey. Not only do they provide backup in sticky situations, they also offer you insights into the world. And who knows, maybe you'll even find love…

You'll want a good jet pack, also known as a Boost Pack, as soon as possible. These packs allow you to literally explore new heights and breeze through some areas of the game. My preferred pack is the Balanced Pack, allowing for good height and fuel. 

Mission variety in Starfield is at a new high. You could be delivering a package one moment, assassinating someone the next, then doing a Mission Impossible and pulling off a high-security heist.

Completing missions is a great way to earn cash. You can always pick up new quests at a Mission Board located in most cities.

Finishing the main storyline in the game isn't the end, so don't be afraid to pursue it. But to avoid spoilers that's where I'll leave it.

If you're super keen to jump into Starfield, early access is available now for those who picked up the premium edition. Otherwise, the full game launches on Xbox Game Pass on September 6.
