‘Crunch’: Apple responds after users complain of new $3499 folding iPhones cracking
Apple has acknowledged a screen problem with its new folding iPhone Duo after some customers reported cracking within hours of use.
Priced at a whopping $3499, some customers have taken to social media to describe cracks, lines and display failures appearing around the foldable crease in the screen – in some cases after hearing a crunch while opening the device.

Less than a week after hitting shelves, the release has been soured by frustrated customers taking to Reddit and other online forums to air their grievances.
San Diego customer Tom Battle said something felt wrong when he tried to open his phone.
“I went to unfold it, and it felt harder to open than usual. And when I opened it, it had the lines on the screen,” he told Bloomberg.
“You could feel a bump or loose piece under the display.”
Another owner, venture capitalist Jonathan King, said he heard a crunch-like sound while opening his Duo.
“I had all intent to post a positive review of my Duo experience today, until it happened to me,” King said.
“The smaller outer screen works just fine, but the inner screen is now unusable.”
The Duo is Apple’s first foldable iteration and one of the biggest departures from the familiar iPhone design since the original model launched in 2007.

Foldable screens have caused headaches for other manufacturers before.
Samsung’s first Galaxy Fold ran into serious display problems in 2019, prompting the company to postpone its release and make changes before putting the device back on the market.
In a statement to nine.com.au, Apple said it is aware of the issue.
“The response to iPhone Duo from early users has been incredibly positive, and we are seeing exciting things from developers who are rapidly updating their apps to take advantage of its unique form factor,” the statement read.
“We are aware of an issue impacting the inner display on a small number of iPhone Duo units.
“If users experience issues with their iPhone Duo display, they should contact AppleCare for a replacement.“
