Former One Direction star Zayn Malik fears he has 'let fans down'

Former One Direction star Zayn Malik has given his first interview since quitting the band, revealing he feels he has “let the fans down”.

Malik announced on Wednesday he was giving up the gig because he wanted to be a “normal 22-year-old”.

He has since told The Sun his decision was “crazy and wild and a bit mad”.

“But I’ve never felt more in control in my life,” he said. “I feel like I’m doing what’s right, right by myself and right by the boys.”

He confessed he had wanted to leave the band for some time but denied there was tension between the band members.

“You know, I did try to do something that I wasn’t happy doing for a while, for the sake of maybe other people,” Malik said.

“Basically I’m only upset [because] I feel like I may have let them down.”

“It’s not that I’ve turned my back on them or anything, it’s just that I just can’t do that anymore because it’s not real to me.”
