Family 'counting lucky stars' after avoiding injury in Gold Coast excavator crash

A young Melbourne girl is lucky to be uninjured when an excavator flipped and crashed into her bedroom while she was sleeping on the Gold Coast.

Emergency crews were called to Eden Avenue in Coolangatta this morning after the machinery crashed through the low-rise apartment building as it was working on a demotion site next door.

Bridget Bill, 11, was on vacation with her family, was in the room at the time and woke to the crash, but was uninjured.

“Nothing hit me…but it did get me a bit worried,” she told 9NEWS.

Her brother was out surfing at the time of the smash, avoiding an onslaught of rubble which hit his bed.

“We’re counting our lucky stars…we’re pretty lucky,” the children’s relieved father Greg Bill said.

Excavator driver Mark Wardrob also escaped injury.

“I was hoping no one was in the bedroom at the time… just fortunate one of the children was out surfing,” Mr Wardrob said.

He claims the ground moved underneath him and was swinging the machine’s arm around as a precautionary measure when it overbalanced.

Workplace health and safety officers will investigate the cause of the incident.
