Young girl burnt at Japanese restaurant in Sydney

A four-year-old girl has been hospitalised after suffering serious burns to her face and body at a Japanese restaurant in Sydney.

The unnamed girl was dining with her family at Wharf Teppanyaki on Lime Street, King Street Wharf when she was burned by an open flame last night, the Sydney Morning Herald reports.

She was treated for burns to her shoulders, cheeks and forehead before being taken by ambulance to hospital. She is believed to be in a stable condition.

Teppanyaki eateries let diners sit around an open hot plate, as a dedicated chef prepares and cooks their meals.

Wharf Teppanyaki is part of the high-end Kobe Jones restaurant chain that boasts a "fun dining experience".

"Using the latest induction technology and all-ceiling hoods, the tables have been designed so that you can see and participate in the creation of your meal, all in absolute comfort," the company says in a statement on its website.

"Part of the allure is to watch the chef's knife and cooking skills while your meal is being prepared."
