A 12-year-old boy was assaulted by a stranger outside a Victorian primary school this morning, punched in the throat as he walked into the school.

The young boy had just been dropped off at Tate Street Primary School in East Geelong by his dad at about 9am when a man walked up and punched him in the throat before walking away.

The boy fell to the ground but managed to get up and run to the school to alert his teacher.

His throat was bruised in the incident and later attended Geelong Hospital for treatment.

The attacker is described as about 173cm tall with a skinny build, and at the time of the attack was wearing blue tracksuit pants and a grey hooded jumper.
