Young boy dies after bike and car collide in Sydney's north-west

A small community in Sydney's north-west has been shattered by the death of a young boy after his bike was hit by a four-wheel-drive.

Cycling around the wide streets of The Ponds with his best friend on Monday evening, eight-year-old Jake Beattie went through a give way sign and was hit struck by an oncoming vehicle.

Neighbours who had just arrived home from work raced over to help.

"You just knew it wasn't going to be good- and straight away everyone was just standing around," resident Kate Kljaic told 9NEWS.

Paramedics desperately tried to revive Jake as his mum Elizabeth watched on.

"The mother was just naturally beside herself and didn't know what was happening, and came rushing down and everyone was doing their best to try and help him," Ms Kljaic said.

"It was very, very difficult to watch."

Jake suffered critical head injuries and died later at Westmead Children's Hospital.

The Ponds is a relatively new area in Sydney's north-west with a lot of young families whose children play in these streets every day.

Jake's death has shaken the community and scared a lot of parents.

"It's not the way you need to learn a lesson, and the poor woman has to live with it," Ms Kljaic said.
