Popular senator Nick Xenophon is reportedly looking to broaden his appeal by taking a leaf from Clive Palmer's book and launching his own political party.

News Corp Australia reports the South Australian independent is in talks with some high-profile candidates to stand alongside him for the Senate.

He said his reason for forming the party - to be called the Nick Xenophon Team, or NXT - was the lack of trust the public had in politicians.

"Voters are also sick of parties that promise one thing before an election and do the opposite afterwards," Senator Xenophon said.

But he said he would not take any current independent senators into the NXT, including former Palmer United Party member Jacqui Lambie.
