Wynyard false alarm spooks Sydney commuters

An emergency evacuation at one of Sydney's busiest stations during peak hour this morning has left commuters on edge.

Sirens were sounded at Wynyard Station just after 9am this morning with commuters told to leave the station immediately.

Transport NSW spokeswoman Katherine Danks told ninemsn the incident was a "false alarm" caused by a lift.

Ms Danks said the station was "not evacuated". However, witnesses told ninemsn they were told by staff to leave the station immediately.

"I could hear the sirens ringing as the train pulled into the station. I could hear someone on the loud speaker telling us to get out of the station," witness Jo Bambagiotti told ninemsn.

Ms Bambagiotti said there was a sense of nervousness among her fellow commuters who began "leaving quickly".

"No-one was running, and no-one said anything to anyone but everyone was definitely walking faster and taking double steps up the stairs," she said.

After arriving at the top of the stairs Ms Bambagiotti noticed that all the gates "were up" before being told to "please leave immediately" by a NSW Transport staff member.

"I was a little nervous about the whole thing given everything that's happened over the past few days. I think most people have a heightened sense of awareness as well," she said.

The evacuation comes just days after the deadly Lindt cafe siege which has rocked the city to its core.
