#Wrongkyle lauded for Olympic gold medal

People have flocked to Twitter to congratulate South Australian swimmer Kyle Chalmers on his stunning gold medal win at the Rio Olympics - the only problem is, it isn't him.

A Scottish Twitter user with the handle @kyle_chalmers has received dozens of tweets applauding his Australian counterparts 100m freestyle effort, much to his surprise.

He began retweeting the congratulatory social media applause shortly after he realised why he had become such an overnight sensation.

Defence Industry Minister Christopher Pyne, however, managed to congratulate a completely different person.

Several high profile Twitter accounts - such as those of the South Australian Sports Institute, the Adelaide Crows, SA Premier Jay Weatherill and Vegemite - were correct in not tagging Scottish Kyle Chalmers.

The intended Kyle Chalmers does not appear to have a Twitter account, but does have a private Facebook account.

He is yet to respond to the social media reaction to his win.
