Woolies plastic bag ban tomorrow: What you need to know

Woolworths will tomorrow remove single-use plastic bags from its stores, so shoppers need to be prepared if they want to avoid getting slugged with extra fees.

The environmentally-friendly move is supported by four of five Australians, according to a survey by research firm Canstar Blue.

Woolworths is getting in a week early ahead of Queensland and Western Australia implementing statewide bag bans from July 1.

This will follow earlier bans by South Australia, Tasmania and the Northern Territory.

Victoria has announced its own ban but provided no timeline.

New South Wales has not joined the nationwide sweep, but Woolworths and Coles are making the move on their own initiative, along with a number of other retailers.

At Woolworths, customers will pay 15 cents for a re-usable bag if they haven't brought their own, or 99 cents for a folding bag.

Coles will switch over from single-use plastic bags on July 1.
