A man has died in a suspicious fire at a unit north of Brisbane.

The Woody Point property is now a crime scene as detectives try to work out what caused the blaze.

Neighbour Damien Shanks told 9News he was on his way to work this morning when he noticed the fire so rushed to the scene.

“We just started just pulling down doors and pulling people out… wish we could have done more,” he said.

Fire crews arrived about 6.30am and found the second-floor unit fully alight. A 35-year-old man, the sole resident of the unit, could not be saved.

"Unfortunately within one-and-a-half minutes of primary search a person was located deceased,” Queensland Fire and Emergency Services spokesman Wayne Parry told the ABC.

Police Inspector Craig White said it was a terrible tragedy that had also displaced occupants of neighbouring units.

The housing commission home remains a crime scene.
