A man has lost his leg in a woodchipper accident in the Hawkesbury region northwest of Sydney.

The 51-year-old was cutting down a tree at a Wilberforce property, when a length of rope wrapped around his leg was caught in the woodchipper this morning.

His colleagues provided first aid and police tied a tourniquet around the man's leg, but he suffered significant blood loss.

CareFlight and NSW Ambulance also treated the man at the scene, before taking him to hospital.

The man underwent a blood and plasma transfusion on the road.

On the way, the ambulance also stopped at a petrol station to buy ice to keep the man's severed leg preserved during the journey.

He arrived at Westmead Hospital in a stable condition.
