Tony Abbott - federal minister for housewives.

That's how Australians are reacting to the prime minister's comment that his greatest achievement as the minister for women was repealing the carbon tax.

Mr Abbott went on to explain that women were particularly focused on the household budget, which was about $550 a year better off with the carbon tax gone.

His comments spawned numerous digs on social media as women pondered what they would do with the extra money.

Two hashtags - #thankstony and #PutYourIronOut - soon began trending.

"#Thankstony With the Carbon tax repeal I can buy a new apron," one woman tweeted.

"#ThanksTony, because of the carbon tax repeal I can afford to leave my sandwich press on ALL THE TIME just in case my hubby wants a snack," said another.

"Thanks to your diligent work as Minister for Women, I can afford 0.08 new bras next year #ThanksTony," was another response.

Others were more critical.

"Thankstony for setting women and families back a few decades," one Facebook user said.

"Well he wasn't lying. Pity the only woman to benifit (sic) from repeal of carbon tax was Gina Reinhardt (sic) #ThanksTony," one man tweeted.
