Two women give birth after getting womb transplant from their own mothers

In a world first, two women have given birth after receiving wombs donated by their own mothers.

Not much is known about the new mothers other than they are both Swedish and both gave birth to healthy baby boys one month ago, the Telegraph reports.

Their mothers, the babies' grandmothers, underwent hysterectomies some months ago to help give their daughters' the opportunity to carry their own child.

The first child was born to a 29-year-old Swedish woman and weighed in at 2.4 kilograms.

The second mother, also a Swede, is 34 years old and gave birth to a healthy 2.6kg baby. She was forced to remove her womb in her 20s after suffering cancer.

The women had been among nine others who underwent womb transplants – seven of which were success.

Allen Pacey from the British Fertility Society called the success rate "very good".

"If it carries on lie this it may have a massive impact on things like surrogacy," he told the Daily Mail.

"Women much prefer to have their own baby than to watch another woman be pregnant."

Both babies were delivered by Caesarean section.
