Investigation after woman with intellectual disability killed in house fire

Police are investigating after a woman with an intellectual disability was killed in a house fire in Sydney's west overnight.

The fire broke out at the back of the home on Cardigan Street in Auburn at 6.30pm yesterday.

The only resident inside, Mary Chalhoub, 63, became trapped inside the home.

She was pulled from the front bedroom of the house unconscious after Fire and Rescue NSW broke a window to save her.

She could not be revived.

"[It was] pretty courageous efforts for those firefighters, one who crawled through the window," Adam Dewberry from Fire & Rescue NSW said.

"The smoke was thick, oily black. It was coming down low. Visibility was nearly non-existent."

9News understands Chalhoub lived alone with an intellectual disability.

The fire was extinguished and investigations are now underway to find the cause of the blaze.

The blaze was so intense that the roof of the home collapsed.

Firefighters have been trying to access the home today but have struggled due to the structural integrity of the home.
