A man is being questioned after his car smashed into a pole and oncoming traffic in Ferntree Gully, leaving a woman fighting for her life and injuring two others.

A 39-year-old driver allegedly lost control of his dark-coloured Honda along Ferntree Gully Road, mounting a median strip and smashing into an oncoming Renault Megane hatchback with three people inside about 11.30pm on Friday night.

The 30-year-old female driver of the hatch was rushed to the Alfred Hospital, where she remains in a critical condition.

The passengers, a 59-year-old woman and a 26-year-old woman, both from Rowville, were also hospitalised.

The 39-year-old Ferntree Gully man is currently being interviewed by police.

He sustained serious injuries in the crash. His pet dog was also ejected from the car, and died at the scene.

Detectives believe the Honda was travelling in excess of 100km/h at the time, and are examining whether drugs and alcohol were a factor.
