Brandis to rule on kidnapping extradition

The federal attorney-general will decide whether a US woman accused of kidnapping her baby daughter two decades ago will be extradited.

Dorothy Lee Barnett, 53, has consented to be sent to the US to face charges of international parental kidnapping and falsifying passport documents.

Barnett gave consent by video link in the Maroochydore Magistrates Court in Queensland on Thursday.

Magistrate Annette Hennessy has sent a letter advising Attorney-General George Brandis of Barnett's decision.

If he decides to send her back to the US, Senator Brandis will also advise whether Barnett will be held in custody or granted bail.

He could make a decision as early as next week.

After losing custody of her 10-month-old daughter, Savanna Todd, in 1994, Barnett allegedly abducted the child from the girl's father in South Carolina during an outing.

US police said Barnett left for a birthday party with her daughter and never returned.

A US arrest warrant was issued that year.

In November 2013, Australian and US police found the pair living on Queensland's Sunshine Coast.
