A teenage girl who died after becoming trapped beneath a tram last night in Sydney's CBD has been remembered as an "angel".

Kyra Dulguime, 16, may have become trapped after she attempted to climb between light rail carriages at a tram stop at George Street in Haymarket just after midnight.

Witnesses say the girl was with her friend at an intersection when she attempted to climb between the carriages but was caught when it started to move.

9News understands the teenager was dragged more than 150 metres.

Dozens of witnesses and passengers tried to help after the teen's friend raised the alarm.

Rescue crews used hydraulic tools and high-pressure airbags to lift the tram after Dulguime was stuck for more than two hours.

The 16-year-old was treated for critical injuries by paramedics but died at the scene.

The driver of the tram, a 52-year-old man, was taken to hospital for mandatory testing.

Police are now working to determine what led to the incident.

"A report will be prepared for the information of the Coroner," police said.

One of the witnesses who was the first to call emergency services told Today passengers on board the tram tried to assist Dulguime.

"We were screaming, 'help her, help her,' so the police and paramedics rushed to the spot," a witness said.

The tram has been removed from the scene.

All light rail services are now operating between Central and Circular Quay again after they were temporarily shut down.

Transport for NSW secretary Howard Collins said the authority is saddened by the teenager's death.

"We extend our deepest condolences to her family, friends and loved ones," his statement read.

"We thank emergency services, staff and anyone who rendered assistance for their efforts last night and we will provide our staff with the support they need."
