Tourist dies after jump from jetty at Gold Coast

A tourist has died in hospital after being pulled unconscious from a popular swimming spot at the Gold Coast yesterday.

The woman, aged 25, is believed to have taken a swim with friends off a jetty at Southport Broadwater, when she failed to resurface at roughly 4.40pm.

Reports suggest she was underwater for more than 10 minutes before being pulled by onlookers.

Bystanders attempted CPR on the woman before paramedics arrived, who later transported her to Gold Coast University Hospital in a critical condition.

"Bystanders started CPR on the woman before our arrival... she's continued on to the Gold Coast University in a critical condition," Queensland Ambulance officer David Morgan said from the scene.

"Quite a traumatic event.

"For someone to go missing like that, quite quickly, a lot of people were distressed by it."

Despite doctors' efforts the woman was unable to be saved and died in hospital overnight.
