An aged care worker is fighting for life and a P-plater has been charged following a hit-and-run collision involving a Tesla at a Melbourne tram stop early this morning.

Police charged 23-year-old Sakshi Agrawal with dangerous driving causing serious injury, failure to stop at the scene of an accident and failure to render assistance this afternoon.

She was granted bail at Melbourne Magistrates' Court this evening, despite the court hearing she was a flight risk because she is not an Australian citizen or resident.

The court heard Ms Agrawal claimed her Tesla was on autopilot when she hit the woman, and that she thought she had more time to slow down.

A 26-year-old woman was crossing Wattletree Road in Armadale in Melbourne's inner-east to board a tram in the dark about 6.30am when she was hit by Ms Agrawal's white Tesla travelling west toward Kooyong Road.

The woman was thrown 15m across the road from the force of the collision.

Ms Agrawal allegedly fled the scene, while a number of witnesses rushed to help the victim and call 000.

She was then rushed to the Alfred Hospital in a critical condition.

Police began hunting for the driver, however, 23-year-old Mount Waverley woman returned to the scene with her partner and housemate to turn herself in to police less than three hours later.
