A NSW south coast woman has been flown to hospital with serious burns to her head and torso after she was splashed with fuel during an argument.

Police say a man arrived at a Lake Tabourie home yesterday evening to confront a woman and her teenage son about a quad bike he claimed had been stolen.

An argument broke out and petrol was allegedly thrown at a car on the property, some of which landed on the woman.

The woman sustained serious burns to her upper torso and head when attempts were made to set the car on fire.

She has been airlifted to a Sydney hospital.

Police say the man was treated at another Lake Tabourie property for burns to his arms, before he was taken to Shoalhaven Hospital for further treatment.

Detectives from Shoalhaven Local Area Command will speak with the man when his medical condition allows.
