A man has been arrested after a woman was stabbed while jogging in a quiet residential street in Melbourne's north-west.

Police were told the woman was jogging near Primula Boulevard in Gowanbrae when she was assaulted by an unknown man with a weapon just after 10.20am today.

The woman in her 20s suffered injuries to her back and hand. She remains in a stable condition after undergoing surgery at the Royal Melbourne Hospital.

A man aged in his 20s is still being questioned by detectives in custody following his arrest at 11.30am.

The area remains cordoned off by police, where investigators remain on scene.

Neighbours told 9News they heard screams at the time and ran outside, but did not see anything suspicious.

Police were looking for a weapon possibly stashed along the walking track, with the police helicopter hovering above and officers patrolling surrounding streets.
