A 55-year-old man from Wollongong has pleaded guilty to manslaughter after striking his elderly mother with a plank of wood in 2019.

Boutros Mouawad from Woonona today faced Wollongong court, pleading guilty to manslaughter after originally having been charged with murder.

Police allege Mr Mouawad struck his 76-year-old mother Hind Mouawad in the backyard of their Woonona home in February 2019.

Emergency services were called to the home about 11pm that night but were unable to revive Ms Mouaward.

Police facts tendered in court say Mr Mouaward told detectives he had been at a nearby RSL club when he believed his mother fell down stairs in the backyard of their home.

He was later charged with murder by investigators.

Mr Mouaward will remain behind bars as he awaits sentencing.
