Witnesses catch armed thief in Sydney

Two witnesses have overpowered an armed thief after he robbed a shop in Sydney's east.

Police said a 21-year-old employee at the Bondi Junction store was leaving with the day's takings when it was snatched from her hand about 3.15pm on Monday.

The robber ran away and two witnesses to the robbery chased him down the street.

The men caught the thief nearby and overpowered him, knocking a stun gun from his hand in the process.

Police arrived on the scene moments later and arrested the 21-year-old.

He was charged with stealing and possession of a prohibited weapon.

He was refused bail and will face Waverley Local Court on Tuesday.
