Tony Windsor considers running against Barnaby Joyce

Former independent federal MP Tony Windsor is considering another tilt at politics.

He says there's a better than 50 percent chance he will stand in his former NSW electorate of New England at the next election.

New England is now held by Nationals deputy leader and Agriculture Minister Barnaby Joyce.

Mr Windsor stood aside before the 2013 election, saying he had a health issue that needed to be addressed.

"I have sort of been sitting back watching what's going on. I think there are some appalling decisions being made and it's kept my interest in politics alive and well," he told ABC radio.

Mr Windsor entered politics in the NSW state parliament, first as a Nationals MP and later as an independent. He won New England in 2001 holding the seat against repeated Nationals challenges.

Following the 2010 election, he was one of four independents who held the balance of power in the hung parliament. He opted for Labor, returning Julia Gillard to The Lodge.
