Wilson Security withdraws services from Manus Island and Nauru detention centres

Wilson Security has announced it will withdraw its services from offshore detention centres on Manus Island and Nauru next year.

The company announced yesterday it will stop providing security to the immigration detention centres from October 2017.

"The provision of security services at Regional Processing Centres is not in line with Wilson Security's long term strategic priorities,” Wilson Security said in an official statement.

“Wilson Security has carried out its contractual obligations to the best of its ability and takes pride in its performance”.

Over the last four years the company has provided services to the centres as a government sub-contractor.

It is believed the withdrawal has been spurred on by numerous abuse and assault allegations within the centres, the Financial Review reported.

It follows the leak of a large archive of files obtained by The Guardian, detailing allegations of abuse and mistreatment on Nauru.

Papua New Guinea’s Supreme Court earlier this year ruled the treatment of detainees at the centre was “unconstitutional” and unlawful.

The announcement follows a decision on August 9 by Spanish infrastructure giant Ferrovial Services, which now owns more than 50 per cent of ASX-listed Broadspectrum, formerly Transfield, to also end work for the Department of Immigration and Border Protection in October next year.

"In relation to the provision of services at the regional processing centres in Nauru and Manus province, these services were not a core part of the valuation and the acquisition rationale of the offer, and it is not a strategic activity in Ferrovial's portfolio," the company said in a statement.
