Refugees allegedly beaten with iron bar on Manus Island

Photographs have emerged of two refugees on Manus Island who were allegedly attacked with an iron bar.

The two Afghan refugees were reportedly walking to a bus station last week when they were brutally beaten by locals wielding an iron bar.

One of the men suffered a deep gash on his forehead and later fainted at a police station, Human Rights Law Centre spokesman Daniel Webb told AAP.

Mr Webb, and journalist Matthew Abbott, who was on the island working for GetUp, witnessed the aftermath of the assault.

"They were surrounded by a group of seven locals who shouted abuse at them, demanded their clothes and shoes, and beat them up,” Mr Webb said.

“The attack ended when another local intervened to save them.”

The men were allegedly bashed and beaten before being robbed by the group.

More than 800 asylum seekers are currently housed in Manus Island’s controversial Australian-run detention centre.

Papua New Guinea’s Supreme Court earlier this year ruled the treatment of detainees at the centre was “unconstitutional” and unlawful.
