Wild weather hits NSW, Victoria

Rescuers are riding out a blizzard with a stranded hiker as extreme weather descends upon parts of NSW and Victoria.

Damaging winds up to 65 km/h with gusts up to 90 km/h are expected to hit the Hunter, Illawarra, Central Tablelands and Southern Tablelands regions on Wednesday as a strong cold front moves across NSW.

Blizzard conditions are forecast to develop in the Snowy Mountains, with winds up to 80 km/h and gusts up to 125 km/h.

The State Emergency Service is advising residents to move vehicles under cover or away from trees, secure loose items and keep clear of fallen power lines.

Rescuers in Victoria's northeast are meanwhile waiting for a wild storm to subside as they bed down with a hiker stranded on the summit of Mount Bogong.

The rescue team found the disorientated man in the early hours of Wednesday morning but were forced to set up camp as conditions remained extreme.
