Wild deer weaves between traffic on city highway

A wild deer has been filmed running alongside cars on a Melbourne highway.

Video obtained exclusively by 9NEWS shows the deer racing down Ringwood bypass, near Ringwood Street, just before 7am today.

Cars can be seen slowing to a crawl on the highway, which has a speed limit of 80km/h, to give the mammal space as it darts between lanes.

A witness called 3AW radio to report the sighting, which is not believed to have caused significant traffic delays.

Deer sightings in suburban areas are not uncommon, Australian Deer Association executive officer Barry Howett told The Age last year.

Mr Howlett told the newspaper that while the animals are harmless, they can cause deadly accidents on roads.

"They could run into traffic and very easily cause an accident," he said.
